Genesis

The Department erstwhile known as Department of Hygiene was started in 1903 and felicitated as one of the oldest Departments of the college.

Objectives

  • To impart education to Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral students in the area of Livestock Production Management
  • To carry out research in the field of Livestock Production Management and to disseminate knowledge on important technologies to line departments and farming community
  • To study weather-based management for livestock farmers of North Eastern region of Tamil Nadu
  • To study the applied aspects in environment sciences including waste management practices for Livestock Production Management

Education

The Department offers courses on Livestock Production Management (4+2) besides offering M.V.Sc and Ph.D degree programmes in the respective discipline.


The Department offers PG diploma course on Animal Welfare (PGDAW) as Distance Education Programme.

Research

Project Completed

    • Validation of Lactic Acid based post teat dip (FINE KINE®) to curtail sub clinical mastitis in dairy cows with a total budget outlay of Rs.1.01 lakhs from Chimertech Pvt Ltd. has been completed during 2025.
    • Validation of Quadmastestmastitis detector as an indirect screening to curtail intramammaray infection in dairy cows a total budget outlay of Rs.1.01 lakhs from Chimertech Pvt Ltd. has been completed during 2025.
    • An Appraisal of Multipurpose Evacuation Shelters and Animal Disaster Risk Reduction Through Capacity Building Programme of Probable Stakeholders for Disaster Resilient Animal House in Tamil Nadu with a Total Budget Outlay of Rs. 24.74 Lakhfrom Tamil Nadu State Disaster Risk Reduction Agency in 2019.
    • DST sponsored Research Project on “Potential of Cultivation of Fodder crops as means of Carbon Capture” with a total budget outlay of Rs.58 lakhs has been completed during March 2015.
    • Risk assessment of heavy metal contamination in Dairy Cattle reared in industrial areas of Erode, total budget 3.5 Lakhs.
    • Network Project on Adaptation and facilitation of livestock to impending climatic changes through shelter management. Funding Agency: ICAR, New-Delhi.
    • Assessment of production potential of milk and other resources in Dharmapuri and Krishnigiri districts of Tamil Nadu. Funding Agency: M/s. Schreiber Dynamix Dairy Ltd, Mumbai, India.
    • Study on traditional managemental practices for preventing diseases in sheep- Funding Agency: SEVA, Madurai and Completed in 2009.
    • Efficacy Evaluation of Nutritional Supplements to dairy herd in relevance to milk production, with Ayurvet as funding agency for Rs.61,304.
    • Efficacy of commercial products in optimizing milk production in cross bred dairy cows during summer stress, with Ayurvet as funding agency for Rs. 84845.

    Facilities

    Under Graduate and Post Graduate Laboratory

    The laboratory is equipped with smart classroom with audio visual aids, podium with collar mike facilities, livestock housing demo boards, livestock housing models, animal exhibits, livestock handling and restraining equipment for different species, breed charts for easy understanding of students.

    Water quality analytical Laboratory

    This laboratory is facilitated with Water quality Analysis laboratory. This laboratory is vested with apparatus and chemicals analysis facilities which offer free service for farmers. The water samples which are collected as per procedure is analysed for physical parameters such as pH, TDS and other minerals. Water samples are received through direct and postal mode from places farther. Moreover, a good number of samples are received every month for analysis. All the results are depicted for livestock standards.

    Environmental Laboratory

    This laboratory is equipped with multi gas monitor, particulate matter counter, aerial sampler etc., Being a thrust area most of the Post Graduate study would include such environmental parameters as the research objectives.

    Extension activities and Services

    • Farm advisory services for livestock entrepreneurs for establishment and management of livestock farm (Integrated, Dairy, sheep/goat, swine and rabbitry) are given.
    • Water quality testing for livestock farmers and advisories on water managementis given.
    • Medium range weather forecast under Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa- Agro Met Field Unit Chennai is collected for the benefit of farming community which covers eleven districts of Tamil Nadu viz Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Thiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi and Villupuram which lie in the north eastern agro climatic zone of Tamil Nadu. The weekly weather data is analysed and disseminated to the farmers through VUTRC and FTC. Different portals like M- Kisan, Doordarshan are also used to update farmer on timely weather interventions.
    • The weather data is collected from semi-automated observatory located at Madhavaram and it is regularly uploaded in the Indian meteorological Department website on daily basis.
    • Farmers Awareness Program and Veterinary Camps are conducted in coordination with line departments for the benefit of farmers.

    Training and Conference

    • The Department in coordination with Department of Veterinary Medicine, Centre for Animal Production Studies and Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board has conducted Dog Catching Training programme for the sanitary workers of northern districts of Tamil Nadu in March, 2026.
    • The Department has conducted Capacity Building for Adoption of Technology (CAT)for women in three batches on “Women Empowerment and Livelihood security through backyard Rabbit production for the rural women farmers of Chengalpattu district” in 2024 with NABARD as funding agency.
    • The Department has organised three days national conference on “Optimization of Livestock Farming for Sustainable Development in the Era of Climate Change” cum annual convention of the society – ISAPM, 22.02.2024 to 24.02.2024.
