Genesis

The Department erstwhile known as Department of Hygiene was started in 1903 and felicitated as one of the oldest formed Departments of the college.

Objectives

  • To impart education to Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral students in the area of Livestock Production Management
  • To carry out research in the field of Livestock Production Management and to disseminate knowledge on important technologies to line departments and farming community
  • To study weather based management for livestock farmers of North Eastern region of Tamil Nadu.
  • To study the applied aspects in environment sciences including waste management practices for Livestock Production Management

Education

The Department offers courses on Livestock Production Management (4+2) besides offering M.V.Sc and Ph.D degree programmes in the respective discipline.

Research

Project Completed

    • DST sponsored Research Project on “Potential of Cultivation of Fodder crops as means of Carbon Capture” with a total budget outlay of Rs.58 lakhs has been completed during March 2015.
    • Risk assessment of heavy metal contamination in Dairy Cattle reared in industrial areas of Erode, total budget 3.5 Lakhs
    • Network Project on Adaptation and facilitation of livestock to impending climatic changes through shelter management. Funding Agency: ICAR, New-Delhi
    • Assessment of production potential of milk and other resources in Dharmapuri and Krishnigiri districts of Tamil Nadu. Funding Agency: M/s. Schreiber Dynamix Dairy Ltd, Mumbai, India
    • Study on traditional managemental practices for preventing diseases in sheep- Funding Agency: SEVA, Madurai and Completed in 2009

    Facilities

    Under Graduate Laboratory

    The laboratory is equipped with smart classroom with audio visual aids, podium with collar mike facilities, livestock housing demo boards, livestock housing models, animal exhibits, livestock handling and restraining equipments for different species, breed charts for easy understanding of students.

    Water quality analytical Laboratory

    This laboratory is facilitated with Water quality Analysis laboratory. This laboratory is vested with apparatus and chemicals analysis facilities which offers free service for farmers. The water samples which is collected as per procedure is analyzed for physical parameters such as pH, TDS and other minerals. Water samples are received through direct and postal mode from places farther. Moreover a good number of samples are received every month for analysis. All the results are depicted for livestock standards.

    Environmental Laboratory

    This laboratory is equipped with multi gas monitor, particulate matter counter, aerial sampler etc., Being a thrust area most of the Post Graduate study would harbor such environmental parameters in the research.

    Extension activities and services

    • Farm advisory services for livestock entrepreneurs for establishment of livestock farm (Integrated, Dairy, sheep/goat, swine and rabbitary)
    • Water quality testing of farmers and advisories on water management
    • Medium range weather forecast under Gramin Krishi Mauam Sewa- Agro Met Field Unit Chennai for the benefit of farming community which covers seven districts namely Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Cudalore and Villupuram which lie in the north eastern agro climatic zone of Tamil Nadu. The weekly weather data is analysed and disseminated to the farmers. The farmers are sent timely weather warning and its timely weather interventions.
    • The weather data of Chennai is collected from weather observatory, Madhavaram is regularly loaded in the Indian meteorological Department website on daily basis.
    • Farmers Awareness Program and Mass Veterinary Contact Camp in coordination with line departments for the benefit of farmers, where health cover, livestock management advisory is being regularly conducted.
