History and objectives

Teaching of Veterinary anatomy was started as early as 1903 when the Madras Veterinary College was started and the objectives are

To teach comparative anatomy of domestic animals to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Veterinary science
To carry out basic and applied research programmes
To impart training programmes for field veterinarians/ clinicians to refresh their anatomical knowledge and provide hands on training which can be applied in clinical diagnosis, physical examination and surgical procedures

Education

The Department is offering a course on “Veterinary Anatomy (4+3)” for the first year students of B.V.Sc & A.H. degree programme as per the MSVE 2016 regulations of VCI. The Department also offers M.V.Sc and Ph.D programmes in Veterinary Anatomy.

Research

Histomorphological and Histochemical studies on various organs in Indian buffalo, Madras Red sheep, Japanese quails, Guinea fowl, Siruvidai Chicken and certain laboratory animals have been completed. The latest technologies in the field of Veterinary Anatomy, Viz., Immuno-histochemical, Electron microscopical studies and basic research on stem cells and computed tomography of organs are carried out in Postgraduate research.

Prepared of CD ROM on "Dissection of ox" and "e-atlas on Histology"
Developed an interactive digital tool for Virtual dissection of calf
Prepared two mobile Apps – “ Anatomy of Buffalo Eye, Anatomy of Buffer Brain”
