History and objectives

Teaching of Veterinary anatomy was started as early as 1903 when the Madras Veterinary College was started and the objectives are

  • To teach comparative anatomy of domestic animals to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Veterinary science
  • To carry out basic and applied research programmes
  • To impart training programmes for field veterinarians/ clinicians to refresh their anatomical knowledge and provide hands on training which can be applied in clinical diagnosis, physical examination and surgical procedures

Education

The Department is offering a course on “Veterinary Anatomy” for the first year students of B.V.Sc & A.H. degree programme. The Department also offers M.V.Sc and Ph.D programmes in Veterinary Anatomy.

Research

Histomorphological and Histochemical studies on various organs in Indian buffalo,Madras Red sheep,Japanese quails,Guinea fowl and certain laboratory animals have been completed. The latest technologies in the field of Veterinary Anatomy,Viz.,Immuno-histochemical, Electron microscopical studies and basic research on stem cells are carried out in Postgraduate research.

  • Prepared of CD ROM on "Dissection of ox" and "e-atlas on Histology"
  • Developed an interactive digital tool for Virtual dissection of calf

  • Histo-embedder with floatation bath

  • Binocular microscopes

  • Fellow IAVA award in the year 2006 and Dr.V.R.Bhamburkar IAVA Silver Jublee Award and Medal of Veterinary Anatomist of the year 2011 to Dr. Geetha Ramesh
  • Certificate of appreciation for preparation of CD ROM on "Dissection of ox" and "e-atlas of Histology" to Dr.Geetha Ramesh, Dr.T.A.Kannan, Dr.Sabhia Hayath Basha
  • Dr.S.Ushakumary, Ph.D was awarded with SKM gold medal for best Ph.D thesis in poultry research
