LABORATORY ANIMAL MEDICINE UNIT


  • Laboratory Animal Medicine (LAM) unit of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) is located in Madhavaram Milk Colony, Chennai-600051
  • The LAM Unit was started in 1973 with the objective of breeding, maintenance and supply of quality research animals for the research scholars of TANUVAS and other institutes
  • The LAM Unit is committed to produce good quality laboratory animals for research purpose
  • The LAM Unit is fully equipped to meet the requirements of Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) with regard to the maintenance of micro and macro-environmental conditions with Heating Ventilation and Air conditioning system (HVAC), barrier housing, dual corridor, wall mounted autoclave, RO water plant, Quarantine room and a laboratory

  • Supply of quality animals for research
  • Consultancy on laboratory animal management, health and animal models
  • Teaching veterinary graduates on laboratory animal biology and diseases
  • Advisory services on animal models for in vivo research
  • Training of scientists, postgraduate research scholars and animal caretakers in the area of laboratory animal management, handling, ethics and research

  • Only institute in India to conduct a Federation of European Laboratory Animal Sciences Associations (FELASA) accredited training programme (for rodents and fish- Functions: A, B, C,& D)

  • Sale of laboratory animals to cater to needs of research institutes in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
  • Collaborations with Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, CPCSEA, NIAW and LASA for training

Procedure for sale of laboratory animals

  • Animals will be supplied only to the institutions or units that are registered with CPCSEA
  • Animals will be supplied only to the projects which have been approved by the Institutional Animal Ethical Committee (IAEC) as per the guidelines of CPCSEA
  • Animal requests should be made at least 60 days in advance giving details of species, age, sex, weight and number of animals required along with the probable date of requirement

Documents required for purchase

  • Duly filled in request form  (click to download the form)
  • Letter of request from the Head of the institute / Department / Chairman / Guide / Investigator addressed to ‘The Director, Centre for Animal Health Studies, TANUVAS, Madhavaram Milk Colony, Chennai 600 051'
  • Photocopy of CPCSEA registration certificate
  • Photocopy of IAEC approval indicating the species and number of animals
  • Buyers should make their own arrangements for transport of animals (air conditioned vehicles) and with cages / boxes (as per CPCSEA guidelines), feed, water bottles and bedding material
  • Procurement of animals is through payment of Cash / DD in favour of   "The Director, CAHS, TANUVAS, Madhavaram, Chennai-600051"
  • Sale timing is from 10 AM to 4 PM on all working days except Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays
