DEPARTMENT OF FOOD PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY


The Department of Food Processing Technology, College of Food and Dairy Technology, Koduveli, Chennai aims to produce industry ready technocrats by imparting quality education in the discipline of food processing technology; the department undertakes need based research and development activities in the area of value added food products. The department is also conducting skill based training programmes for farmers and entrepreneurs through demonstration and incubation facilities available at the department. Our faculty members are engaged in teaching, research and extension activities and also actively participating and organizing seminars, workshops and skill based training programmes.

Objectives

Education:

To offer Undergraduate and Post Graduate courses in Food Technology.

Research:

To conduct research in the development of newer food products according to change in consumer behaviour, nutritional studies with the aim of fulfilling nutritional requirements of vulnerable people at low cost, working on food choices for children, geriatric and sports peoples and similar other fields like fortification and functional foods.

Extension:

To conduct training programmes and demonstrations on value addition of food products to the farmers, entrepreneurs, rural youths and Self Help Groups.


Education

The Department currently offers the courses related to food processing for the B.Tech. (Food Technology) students. Besides, the Department also offers M.Tech. and Ph.D. programmes in Food Processing Technology.

Research

Thrust areas of Research:

Novel food processing and value addition, design and development of processing equipment for traditional food products and developing functional foods.

Extension

The department is focusing on transferring food processing techniques to students, food business operators and industry personals. On achieving this sense, seminars, workshop, hands on training, demonstrations and online sessions are conducted to students, entrepreneurs and government officials. Our faculty are providing consultancy and project proposals on payment basis to entrepreneurs who need to start their venture. In addition to this, awareness programmes about food borne diseases, importance of cold chain in handling and transporting perishables to them through media (Radio Talks/TV shows) and in-person are done on regular basis.

  • Organized National Online workshop on “Nutritional Sustenance through Dairy Products-Initiatives and Strategies on 01.06.2020.
  • Organized Two days National webinar on “Pandemics and Food Security in the new world order” from 19.06.2020 to 20.06.2020.
  • Organized Three Short Term Training Programme on “Changing Paradigms on Food Security and Food Sufficiency” from 19.10.2020 to 24.10.2020, 23.11.2020 to 28.11.2020 and 14.12.2020 to 19.12.2020 funded by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi.
  • Organized two Days National Online Conference on “ Implementing Strategies to achieve Food Security and Food Sustainable Partnership: Progress and Challenges” funded by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi from 29th & 30th of July 2021
  • Organized Faculty Development Programme on “Building Sustainable and Resilient Food Security and Food Processing systems” funded by All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi from 25.10.2021 to 29.10.2021
