INFRASTRUCTURE

Hostel

Initially the students are accommodated in 5 private rented buildings at different places in Namakkal town. From June 1991, the hostels were moved to its permanent building with fully furnished rooms located in the main campus at Ladduvadi. At present undergraduate boys are accommodated in 4 hostel blocks. A separate P.G. block meant for P.G. students is available. After the admission of women students in 1997-1998, a separate hostel for women was started. Presently two hostel blocks exclusively for girls are available. Presently 393 undergraduate (213 men and 180 women) students and 37 postgraduate students (29 men and 8 women) are residing in the hostel. A student mess is in operation on "Dividend system" by elected students representatives and student auditors under the supervision of deputy warden. A centralized kitchen with steam cooking equipments and solar water heating systems of 1000 LPD at 800 c is available in both men and ladies hostel for cleaning of utensils. In addition, gasifier and dough kneading facilities are available for preparation of wholesome and hygienic food. The kitchen and dining halls are provided with fly control facilities. Further, hygienic potable water through R.O plants are available at both boys and girls hostels. A part time medical officer visits the hostel twice in a week to provide medical care to the students. Free internet facilities are provided in the hostel for the benefit of the students after college hours. Wi-Fi internet connectivity to PG hostel is also available.

Hospital Facilities

The Veterinary College teaching hospital, Namakkal which was erstwhile functioning as a Veterinary Hospital, under the Directorate of Animal Husbandry, Government of Tamil Nadu was taken over by the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal to impart training to the veterinary graduates of this institution in the year 1989. Realizing the need to provide better and effective service to the livestock and pets of this region and to give hands-on training to the veterinary graduates, a separate department of Clinics was established in the year 1994 with the deployment of staff from all the clinical subjects viz. Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Clinical Medicine and Surgery.

Veterinary hospital campus at Trichy road started its service in a single old asbestos shed. Subsequently, different specialized units like Medicine, Surgery and Gynaecology & Obstetrics for large and small animals were created for effective teaching and to bestow better service to the public.

Gradually permanent structures were built to accommodate clinical laboratory, casualty unit, large animal inpatient unit with owners rest room, small animal operation theatre with modern facilities, referral clinics for small and large animals, students lecture hall equipped with audio visual aids and Large animal operation theatre with shadow less lamps and hydraulic operation table

The hospital provides special diagnostic and treatment facilities like Endoscopy, Ultrasonography, ECG, Diathermy and Cryo-Surgery and Dental Scaling, Small and Large animal surgical services, Contrast radiographic facilities, Physiotherapy, Large animal reproductive Ultrasonography, Infertility clinic and inhalant anesthetic facilities for small and large animals. A separate Emergency and Critical Care Unit is functioning round the clock throughout the year.

Animal Feed Analytical and Quality Assurance Laboratory (AFAQAL)

Animal Feed Analytical and Quality Assurance Laboratory was started on 14th April, 1994 in the hospital campus of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal to test the feeds meant for poultry and livestock. Testing feed/feed ingredients for their proximate components and mycotoxins is done on cost effective basis on samples received from all over the country. In due course of time, the types of analyses was increased from 12 to 50 for the benefit of farmers. In the year 2010 , the laboratory was shifted to its own building located at the Veterinary College and Research Institute campus. A new project entitled "Modernization / Upgrading of AFAQAL", VCRI, Namakkal for testing of animal/poultry products has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs.4.36 crores by Agricultural Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India, New Delhi and the project is under progress.

Computer Centre

This centre offers courses on computer applications in veterinary and animal sciences to postgraduate students besides offering internet services to departments and students. Students access the World Wide Web at free of cost. Computers in various departments are connected with local area network of TANUVAS. Students are also given free hands on training in computer applications.

Library

VC&RI library was established in 1987 soon after inception of the college at Namakkal. The library database system consists of 9,975 books, 87 journals, 2800 back volumes, 48 video cassettes and 97 CD/DVD resources. Facilities such as photocopying, educational videos and internet browsing facilities are available for student's use. Besides the main library, each department also maintains an individual library filled with important books pertaining to their department.
