DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH AND EPIDEMIOLOGY


The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology was established during 2023to offer Under-Graduate course (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) as per G.O(Ms.) No.96 dated 18.08.2020 Animal Husbandry Dairying and Fisheries (AH6) Department, Chennai as well as carrying out basic and applied research in the field of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology. The department was established with the primary objective of utilizing professional veterinary skills, scientific knowledge and available resources to address human health challenges, with the ultimate aim of promoting and prolonging public health.


Objectives

  • To offer undergraduate courses inVeterinary Public Health and Epidemiology.
  • To undertake research on zoonotic diseases, food safety, Epidemiological factors and Environmental health.
  • To apply professional veterinary expertise, skills, scientific knowledge and available resources to address human health challenges, with the ultimate aim of promoting and prolonging public health.
  • To cerate awareness about the zoonotic diseases, waste management, food adulterants, environmental pollution and epidemiological factors on emerging diseases among public and students.

Under-Graduate Education

As per Veterinary Council of India under MSVE Regulations (2016), The following courses are being offered to the undergraduate (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) students in this Department.

Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology - (3+1)

  • Unit – 1 : Veterinary Public Health and Food safety
  • Unit – 2 : Veterinary Epidemiology
  • Unit – 3 : Zoonotic diseases
  • Unit – 4 : Environmental Hygiene

Credit based annual examination pattern will be carried out for Papers I and II

  • Paper I : Unit – 1 and Unit – 2
  • Paper II : Unit – 3 and Unit – 4

Laboratory facilities

The Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiologydepartment is well equipped with advanced laboratories to support education and research. Each laboratory is outfitted with state-of-the-art instrumentation.These laboratories collectively enable education, high-quality research, diagnosticsand training in the domains of public health, food safety, epidemiology, zoonoses and environmental hygiene.

  • Milk Hygiene laboratory is well equipped with sophisticated equipments such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Somatic Cell Counter, Laminar Air Flow, Incubator, Hot air Oven, Autoclave, Water Bath, Magnetic Stirrer with hot plate, pH meter, Disc comparator and Vortex shaker
  • Meat Hygiene laboratoryalso well equipped with sophisticated equipments such as Gas Chromatography (GC),Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), Biosafety cabinet II, Incubator, Hot Air Oven, Autoclave, Water Bath, Magnetic Stirrer with hot plate, Tissue Homogenizer, Sample Bag Mixerand Vortex Shaker
  • Zoonoses cum Epidemiology Laboratoryis equipped with Thermal Cycler,Gel documentation system,ELISA Reader, Fluorescence Microscope, BOD Incubator, Water Analyser, Air Sampler, UV Spectrophotometer,SDS PAGE,TDS meter, DO meter,Distillation Unit, Rotary Shaker, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Deep Freezer (-20°C), Colony Counter and Data Processing and Networking Units

  • Assessing the quality control of milk, meat and their products
  • Translational research focused on the development of rapid diagnostic tools
  • Surveillance and screening for the prevalence of major zoonotic diseases
  • Research on innovative prevention and control strategies for zoonotic diseases
  • Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) – metagenomic sequencing of meat
  • Research on predictive modeling and forecasting of zoonotic diseases
  • Research on Carbon sequestration
