Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology


The department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology was established at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Udumalpet in the year 2023 to cater to the needs of B.V.Sc & A.H curriculum. The department started functioning from 18.05.2023 with the posting of two faculty.

Objectives

  • To impart quality education to undergraduate students of B.V.Sc.& A.H. in the discipline of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology
  • To undertake research projects in collaboration with external funding agencies and private pharmaceutical companies
  • To offer drug information and poison information services to field veterinarians and farmers
  • To create awareness on the impact of antimicrobial resistance and the importance of ethnoveterinary medicine among field veterinarians and farmers


Education

The following courses are being offered in the third professional year to the undergraduate students in the discipline of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology as per the Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education - 2016 regulations prescribed by Veterinary Council of India:

  • Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology (Paper I and II) - 4+1 Credit Hours

  • VPT - Paper I
  • Unit I: General Pharmacology
  • Unit II: Drugs acting on Autonomic Nervous System
  • Unit III: Drugs acting on Central Nervous System
  • Unit IV: Drugs acting on Different Body Systems

  • VPT - Paper II
  • Unit V: Chemotherapy
  • Unit VI: Veterinary Toxicology

The department has four laboratories well equipped with teaching aids and instruments to provide hands-on training to undergraduate students as per MSVE 2016 standards for UG teaching

Future Activities

  • To develop Computer Aided Learning Facility and Simulation models for teaching experimental pharmacology
  • To arrange for exposure visits to pharmaceutical companies for the undergraduate students
  • To conduct pharmaceutical meet to the undergraduate students in the fourth professional year
  • To establish and maintain central laboratory animal facility as per CCSEA guidelines
  • To document ethnoveterinary practices, validate and popularise proven ethnoveterinary formulations among the field veterinarians and farmers
