DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL NUTRITION

The Department of Animal Nutrition was established in 2021 in the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Udumalpet as per G.O(Ms.) No.96 dated 18.08.2020 of Animal Husbandry Dairying and Fisheries (AH6) Department, Chennai to offer Under-Graduate course (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) as well as carrying out basic and applied research in the field of Animal Nutrition.

Objectives

To offer undergraduate courses in Animal Nutrition.
To undertake research on nutrition of livestock and poultry.
To advice farming community on feeding technologies to suit their needs.
To conduct livestock feeding related training programs to the farmers.

Activities

Teaching

As per the MSVE 2016 regulations prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India, the following course is offered to B.V.Sc & A.H during second Professional Year.

Animal Nutrition (Paper I and II) – 3+1 credit hours.

Paper-I

Unit 1- Principles of Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology
Unit 2- Applied Ruminant Nutrition–I

Paper-II

Unit 3- Applied Ruminant Nutrition–II
Unit 4- Applied Non-Ruminant Nutrition

Laboratory Facilities

Feed and fodder analysis lab – To estimate proximate principles of feed samples for undergraduate teaching.
A model feed mill plant to conduct training to the farmers and for undergraduate teaching.

Thrust areas of research

Evaluating the nutrient composition of commonly available feedstuffs.
Exploring the use of unconventional feeds in feeding of livestock.
