DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS TECHNOLOGY


The Department of Livestock Products Technology (LPT) has been established in the year 2023 as per G.O (Ms.) No.22 dated 14.02.2023 of Animal Husbandry, Dairying, Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare (AH 6-2) Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, Chennai to offer Under-Graduate course (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) in the field of Livestock Products Technology. The department is equipped with Dairy technology laboratory, Meat technology laboratory and slaughter hall in compliance with the Minimum Standard of Veterinary Education (MSVE 2016) of Veterinary Council of India.

Objectives

  • To impart knowledge on milk and meat processing and technology of value added Livestock products to undergraduate B.V.Sc & A.H students
  • To carry out need based research projects in Livestock products technology
  • To provide hands on training and entrepreneurship skills to students, farmers, unemployed youth and self-help groups on the preparation of value added milk and meat products


Education

As per Veterinary Council of India under MSVE Regulations -2016, the following course is being offered to the undergraduate (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) students during Third professional year at this department.

Livestock Products Technology (2+1)

Unit I Milk and Milk products technology
Unit II Wool Science
Unit III Abattoir practices and Animal by-products technology
Unit IV Meat Science

Research

  • To develop novel milk and meat products
  • To undertake field oriented research programme to assess the quality of milk and meat products
  • To develop freeze dried ready to cook meat products
