DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY

The Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology was established at Veterinary College and Research Institute, Theni in the year 2023 to offer quality education to B.V.Sc.& A.H. students.

Objectives

To impart knowledge to the Under-graduate students in the discipline of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology
To conduct need based pharmacological / toxicological research on natural and synthetic drugs and allied products
To offer drug information services to the farming and scientific community.

Education

As per the MSVE-2016 regulations prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India, the department offers the following under-graduate courses for IIIrd Professional Year Students with 4+1 credit hours.

Unit – I : General Pharmacology
Unit – II : Drugs Acting on Autonomic Nervous System
Unit – III : Drugs Acting on Central Nervous System
Unit – IV : Drugs Acting on Different Body Systems
Unit – V : Veterinary Chemotherapy
Unit – VI : Veterinary Toxicology

Infrastructure

The department has a Pharmacy Laboratory, Experimental Pharmacology Laboratory, Toxicology/ Chemotherapy Laboratory, and Research Laboratory. The laboratories are well equipped with instruments such as Isolated Tissue Bath, Kymograph, Bio-safety Cabinet, Spectrophotometer, Plethysmometer, Photoactometer, Analgesiometer, Binocular Microscope, Rota Rod Apparatus,pH Meter, Centrifuge, Vortex Shaker, Antibiotic Zone Reader, Rat holder, Rat & Mice Observation Cages, Incubator, Autoclave, Hot Air Oven, Refrigerators and Analytical Balance as per mandate of MSVE 2016.
