Department of Veterinary Microbiology


The Department of Veterinary Microbiology was established in 573.46 square meter area and has three laboratories viz. Bacteriology and Mycology Lab, Virology Lab and Immunology Lab which are endowed with state-of-the-art facilities for education and research in Veterinary Microbiology and Biotechnology to aid in diagnosis of livestock and poultry diseases. Equipment worth of Rs. 64,40,461/- was purchased for teaching of undergraduate students, research and diagnostic purpose.
The department focuses on offering quality education on Veterinary Microbiology to the undergraduate students as per the MSVE 2016. It renders the diagnostic services to the allied departments, field veterinarians and poultry farmers. Disease investigation is regularly carried out during outbreaks for diagnosis and suitable control and prevention measures are advised for the benefit of farming communities.

  • Isolation and identification of bacteria, viruses and fungi
  • Evaluation of Microbial load in feed and water
  • Antibiogram
  • Immuno-diagnostic tests
  • Molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases of livestock and poultry

Objectives

  • To offer standard quality education in the subject of Veterinary Microbiology for the undergraduate students.
  • To carry out research in various Livestock and avian infectious diseases.
  • To offer diagnostic services for diagnosis of infectious diseases of livestock and to offer advice on their control and prevention to the farmers.
  • To cater laboratory facilities for the benefit of researchers.

Education

  • The Course, Veterinary Microbiology (Unit 1,2,3,4 and 5) (3 + 2) is being offered by this department to the undergraduate students during second professional year.

Research

  • Need oriented research works are being carried

Extension

  • Routine processing of clinical and post mortem samples submitted to the department from other departments of the institute, nearby dispensaries and farms for the diseases diagnosis.
  • Disease investigation is rendered during the outbreak within and outside district.

Facilities Available

Immunology Laboratory

  • This lab equipped with ELISA test reader, Microplate washer, Deep freezer (-20ᵒC), Electrophoresis system, Millipore filtering system along with vacuum pump, water bath, ordinary centrifuge, and Photo colorimeter for conducting UG practical class and to carry out basic research in immunology and serology.
  • This lab is also utilized for serological diagnostic services.

Bacteriology and Mycology Lab

  • This lab is endowed with bacteriological incubator, BOD incubator, Students light microscope, High speed centrifuge, Refrigerated centrifuge, Refrigerator, Micro centrifuge, Water bath, Weighing balance, Vortex, Colony counter and Vertical Laminar air flow to carry out Bacteriology and mycology works.

Virology Lab

  • This lab is provided with Biosafety level II cabinet, Inverted microscope, Thermal cycler, Egg candler, ordinary centrifuge, Vacuum filtering unit and Egg incubator to carry out cell culture and embryonated egg inoculation for the virus isolation and identification.

Sterilization room

  • This room is provided with autoclave (35 Litre and 53 Litre), Hot air oven for sterilization and decontamination.
