DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL GENETICS AND BREEDING

The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding (11°35'29.1"N 78°47'58.7"E) was established during the year 2020 (G.O(Ms.) No.155 dated 01.11.2019 Animal Husbandry Dairying and Fisheries (AH6) Department, Chennai) to offer Undergraduate courses as well as carrying out basic and applied research in the field of Animal Genetics and Breeding.

Objectives

To offer Animal Genetics and Breeding courses to undergraduate students.
Survey, evaluation and characterisation of native breeds of livestock.
Molecular characterisation of trait specific genes pertaining to production, reproduction and disease resistance.

Education

The following courses are being offered to the undergraduate students at this Department:

Animal Genetics and Breeding: 3+1

Unit-1 (Biostatistics and Computer Application)
Unit-2 (Principles of Animal and Population Genetics)
Unit-3 (Principles of Animal Breeding)

Laboratory Facilities

Computer Laboratory is equipped with modern computers along with audio-visual aids for undergraduate teaching.
Undergraduate Laboratory is equipped with teaching aids and infrastructure facilities to use microscopes for teaching and research activities.

Thrust areas of research

Evaluation, conservation and propagation of important indigenous breeds of livestock.
Identification of molecular variation in genes associated with production and reproduction traits of native breeds of livestock.
Cytogenetic screening of breeding bulls and infertile animals for genetic defects and diagnosis of freemartinism.
