Regional Centre for Conservation of Native dogs, Tenkasi


The Government of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned and funded a scheme for the establishment of a “Regional Centre for the Conservation of Native Dog Breeds of Tamil Nadu, namely Rajapalayam, Kanni, Chippiparai, and Kombai, at Pavoorchatram in Tenkasi District. The primary objective of this centre is the preservation, propagation, and promotion of these indigenous breeds. The centre has been established on a total land area of 0.53 acres and is dedicated to the scientific maintenance and breeding of native dog varieties, including Rajapalayam, Kanni, Chippiparai, and Kombai. At the time of its inception, the centre housed a total of 28 dogs, comprising 5 females and 2 males from each breed, to ensure systematic breeding and effective conservation practices. The centre is strategically located at Pavoorchatram in Tenkasi District, along the Tenkasi to Tirunelveli Main Road, at geographical coordinates of approximately 8.910° N latitude and 77.380° E longitude.



Objectives

  • To establish a state-of-the-art model breeding unit for indigenous dog breeds, aimed at their scientific conservation and sustainable development.
  • To create awareness among pet owners and the general public regarding the importance, scientific breeding practices, and proper management of native dog breeds.
  • To produce and supply superior-quality puppies of indigenous dog breeds to needy individuals and interested stakeholders, while ensuring the preservation of their genetic purity and desirable traits.
  • To impart hands-on training to stakeholders, including breeders, pet owners, and interested individuals, on scientific breeding techniques and effective management practices for native dog breeds.

Inauguration

The Regional Centre for the Conservation of Native Dogs was inaugurated on Ist September 2025 by the Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries, Fishermen Welfare and Animal Husbandry, Thiru Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, in a grand ceremony. The event marked a significant milestone in the efforts toward the preservation and promotion of indigenous dog breeds in India.

Adult Animal Unit

This unit consists of a total of 28 adult breeding dogs, comprising both male and female individuals.

Whelping Unit

This unit is utilized for the whelping of female dogs and for the care and management of young stock. It provides a controlled and hygienic environment to ensure safe delivery, proper nurturing, and healthy growth of puppies during the early stages of development.

Isolation unit

Designated for the isolation of sick animals to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
