GENESIS

The Veterinary Clinical Complex (VCC), Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu serves as a major referral veterinary healthcare centre catering to the needs of livestock farmers and pet owners in the Cauvery Delta Region. The Complex provides comprehensive veterinary healthcare services for large and small animals, including preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical, gynaecological and obstetrical care. Through its dedicated clinical services, the VCC contributes significantly to improving animal health, productivity and welfare in the region.

In addition to providing quality animal healthcare, the VCC functions as an important centre for clinical education, research, extension and professional training. The Complex offers hands-on clinical training to undergraduate and internship students, supports field-oriented and postgraduate research, and conducts outreach programmes for livestock farmers and veterinary professionals. By integrating patient care, teaching, research and extension activities, the VCC plays a pivotal role in advancing veterinary services in the Cauvery Delta Region.


CLINICAL UNITS, INFRASTRUCTURE AND FACILITIES

The Veterinary Clinical Complex (VCC), Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu is equipped with specialized clinical units and advanced infrastructure to provide comprehensive veterinary healthcare services for both large and small animals. The Out-Patient Unit offers medical, surgical, gynaecological and obstetrical services to livestock farmers and pet owners across the Cauvery Delta Region, while the In-Patient Unit provides post-operative management and intensive care for critically ill animals. The Ambulatory Unit extends veterinary services to nearby villages through regular field visits, ensuring timely healthcare delivery at the farmers' doorstep.

The VCC houses state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical facilities, including Computerized Radiography (CR), Colour Doppler Ultrasonography, Echocardiography, C-Arm Imaging, Video Endoscopy and Electrocardiography (ECG). A fully equipped operation theatre with advanced anaesthesia facilities, orthopaedic and ophthalmic surgical equipment supports routine and specialized surgical procedures in both large and small animals. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is furnished with automated haematology and biochemical analysers for rapid and accurate disease diagnosis.

Additional facilities include a pharmacy, immunization unit, small animal critical care unit with advanced monitoring and oxygen support systems, dermatology unit, physiotherapy and rehabilitation unit, ophthalmic operating microscope, slit-lamp biomicroscope, downer cow sling unit, animal forklift for handling recumbent animals, and a dedicated large animal inpatient ward. These facilities collectively support quality veterinary healthcare, clinical education, research and extension services, making the Veterinary Clinical Complex a major referral centre for animal healthcare in the Cauvery Delta Region.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

The Veterinary Clinical Complex (VCC), Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu plays a vital role in imparting hands-on clinical training to undergraduate veterinary students in accordance with the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) – Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education (MSVE) 2016 regulations. Clinical training is offered through the courses Veterinary Clinical Practice–I and Veterinary Clinical Practice–II, enabling students to acquire practical skills in diagnosis, treatment and management of animal diseases.

The VCC serves as a major clinical training centre for B.V.Sc. & A.H. students and interns. Students receive extensive exposure through Out-Patient (OP), In-Patient (IP) and Ambulatory clinical services, allowing them to gain experience in handling a wide variety of medical, surgical, gynaecological and obstetrical cases. Internship training is regularly provided to B.V.Sc. & A.H. students from various constituent colleges of TANUVAS, including Madras Veterinary College, Chennai, and Veterinary Colleges and Research Institutes at Namakkal, Tirunelveli, Salem, Udumalpet and Theni. Regular clinical case presentations and discussions further strengthen students' clinical reasoning, diagnostic skills and professional competence.

EXTENSION AND TRAINING

Regular Mass Contact Programmes, Infertility Camps, Pet Animal Health Camps and Awareness Programmes are organized to provide veterinary services, disseminate technical knowledge and address field-level problems faced by livestock owners in the Cauvery Delta Region.

The VCC also serves as a training centre for capacity building of veterinary professionals and field functionaries. Hands-on training programmes are conducted for personnel of the line departments, while specialized training in ultrasonographic examination and advanced diagnostic techniques is provided to field veterinarians to enhance their clinical skills and improve the delivery of veterinary healthcare services.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The Veterinary Clinical Complex (VCC), Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu actively supports clinical and field-oriented research aimed at improving animal health, disease diagnosis and veterinary healthcare delivery. The available clinical, diagnostic and imaging facilities provide an excellent platform for conducting field-based and postgraduate research involving a wide range of medical, surgical, gynaecological and obstetrical cases. Research activities are focused on addressing the healthcare needs of livestock and companion animals in the Cauvery Delta Region. The VCC has successfully implemented several externally funded projects that have strengthened veterinary healthcare infrastructure and services, including the Animal Mobile Medical Ambulance for Rural Veterinary Care, strengthening of diagnostic modalities in teaching veterinary hospitals, and establishment of a Large Animal In-Patient Referral Hospital. Current research areas include reproductive physiology, ultrasonographic diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders, diagnosis and management of recumbent cow syndrome, and infectious diseases of livestock
