DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PREVENTIVE MEDICINE
The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine was established during 1985 by offering undergraduate courses. The Postgraduate programme was started in the Department during the year 1993. In addition to the education, this department undertaking various research projects and extension activities to uplift the farming communities.
Objectives
To impart education to the under graduate and postgraduate students in the subject of Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine.
To adopt suitable research programmes and provide facilities to the postgraduate and doctoral degree students for doing their research work.
Carrying out research projects funded by the university / external sources.

Recorded the canine parvo viral infection 2a and 2b in dogs in Namakkal district by molecular epidemiology.
Recorded blue tongue serotype-23 in sheep population at Valasiramani, Trichy district.
Recorded lineage 4 PPR virus infection in goats at Mohanur.
Recorded FMD "O" serotype outbreak in dairy animals at Gopichettipalayam, Erode.
Mysterious death of cattle and buffaloes at Vennandhur, Namakkal district and pony horse at Trichirapalli were confirmed as rabies by FAT.
Seroprevalence of bovine viral diarrhoea in North-western zone of Tamil Nadu was identified as 13.2 % by indirect ELISA in cattle and BVD-1 virus was identified and sequenced.
Recorded overall prevalence of canine haemoparasitic infections in dogs of Namakkal region as 26 % by molecular epidemiology.
Recorded prevalence of 25.9 %, 13.5 % and 62.5 % of Newcastle disease, Infectious bronchitis, and fowl pox respectively in backyard poultry by molecular epidemiology.
Recorded Brucella melitensis infection in sheep flock at Dindigul district by RBPT and PCR.
Recorded Brucella melitensis infection in sheep flock at Pavithram, Namakkal district by Molecular epidemiology.
Developed epidemiological map for gastrointestinal parasitism in small ruminants of Namakkal, Trichy and Pudukottai districts of Tamil Nadu.
Recorded MAP infection in small ruminants in organized and unorganized farms.
Infrastructure Facilities
This department having facilities to offer undergraduate and postgraduate practicals.
Postgraduate laboratory is equipped with gradient thermal cycler, Gel documentation system, Ultra low deep freezer (-86°C), Deep freezer (-20°C), Vertical Laminar flow, cooling centrifuge, Dark field microscope, FAT microscope, Inverted microscope and bacteriological incubator for strengthening research facilities.
A separate "Leptospirosis laboratory" is being maintained in this department for screening of human and animal sera samples by Dark Field Microscopy (DFM), Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) on cost basis.
Investigation of disease epidemics
During the phase of epidemic epidemiological investigations are being carried out to indentify the cause and creation of disease database.
Farm animals are being routinely screened against infectious and contagious diseases.
Offering regular disease investigation service on government farms, field outbreaks, captive and wild animals etc.,
Receiving various clinical samples from the field and processing in the disease investigation laboratory for major infectious diseases of livestock, poultry, companion, captive and wild animals, etc.,
Extension Activities
On and off campus training programmes are being offered to progressive farmers and Field Veterinarians to update the knowledge on prevention and control of infectious diseases.
Awareness campaigns are being conducted by this department to the public against Rabies, leptospirosis, tuberculosis, brucellosis and zoonotic parasitic infestations through distribution of pamphlets and in newspapers.
Developed and advocated a new technique on “Treatment of mastitis without using antibiotics’ to Veterinary Assistant Surgeons of Government of Tamil Nadu for the benefit of dairy farmers and to avoid indiscriminate use of antibiotics
Awareness on immunization and deworming for pet animals has been created among owners visited to TVCC
