Objectives

The Department of Surgery and Radiology is one of the oldest departments of Madras Veterinary College established in 1903. The Department of Surgery and Radiology is known for its excellence and achievements in the field. This department is engaged in teaching, research and extension, besides extending surgical facilities to farmers and pet owners.

Major Activities

Small Animal Operation Theatre

Small Animal Operation Theater is well equipped with gaseous anesthetic machine with ventilator, vital sign monitor, electrocautery, and facilities for cardiothoracic surgery. Around 900 various surgeries per year were performed on gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive and cardiopulmonary systems are performed. Emergency surgeries for caesarian section, intestinal obstruction, urinary obstruction, gastric dilation and volvulus syndrome are also done.

Large Animal Operation Theatre

The Large animal theatre is equipped with a versatile hydraulic operation table with pulley and hoist, which makes the positioning of the animal easier. Bovine, equine and small ruminants surgery are performed here. Various surgeries performed include rumenotomy, enucleation of the eyeball, 5th rib resection, fracture fixation using AO implants, oesophagotomy, patellar desmotomy, castration and uretherotomy.

Orthopaedic and Arthroscopy Theatre

The Orthopaedic theatre is equipped with AO orthopaedic instruments, orthopaedic drill, surgical diathermy, Boyle's apparatus and a C. Arm X-ray machine. Recent fracture fixation techniques using AO principles have been standardized. Spinal decompression procedures for disc prolapse, spinal fractures have also been standardized apart from other procedures like intramedullary pinning, dynamic compression plating and tension band wiring. Diagnostic arthroscopy has been standardized for the first time in the country. Apart from diagnostic arthroscopy some therapeutic arthroscopy procedures are also being standardized.

Ophthalmology Theatre

The Department has pioneered the technique of the cataract extraction by minimally invasive phacoemulsification technique and IOL implantation. Other common surgeries performed are iridectomy, repositioning of the eyeball, conjunctival flap surgery and keratectomy

Radiology and Physiotherapy Unit

This unit is equipped with computerized 500 mA X-ray machine with two tubes, one for large animals and one for small animals. Many contrast radiographic techniques including Cystography, IVP, Myelography and Epidurography are regularly being carried out. This unit is also equipped with physiotherapy equipments like Diathermy, Ultrasound massage unit, Electro-diagnostic muscle nerve stimulator including Laser physiotherapy unit

Dental/ Oro maxillary Surgery Unit

Dental unit is equipped with ulrasonic dental scaler, 20 mA dental x-ary unit, denatl autoclave and root canl therapy unit with high speed dental burr for treating dental caries. Around 50- 60 number of cases per year including various procedures like scaling, tooth extraction and reconstructive procedures are being done at this unit.

  • Standardization of pericardial drainage and fifth rib resection for the treatment of Traumatic pericarditis in bovines
  • Standardization of desmotomy procedures for the treatment of chronic luxation of patella.
  • Advanced Anesthesia (inhalational and injectable) for critically ill patients/ emergency surgeries
  • Urographic studies in dogs and cats.
  • Internal fixation and external fixation techniques for fracture treatment in small animals and large animals.
  • Laparoscopic Ovariohystrectomy/ neutering in dogs
  • Minimally Invasive Phacoemulsification cataract extraction and IOL implantation in dogs.
  • Arthroscopy techniques in dogs.
  • Spinal decompression procedures
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Stem cell therapy and Regenerative Medicine using extracellular matrices embedded with stem cells
