• The Department has completed 25 research projects within a short span of 13 years
• Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission has identified this department as a consultant for framing the Livestock Policy of the State
• This Department has trained more than 350 persons in different areas of livestock economics
• In order to serve the marginal livestock farmers, model economics of different livestock enterprises (Cow, Buffalo, Sheep, Goat, Desi fowl, White Pig, Rabbit and Japanese Quail) are prepared and distributed thereby extending the farm advisory services to the needy livestock farmers. So far, about 500 livestock farmers were benefited from the farm advisory services rendered by this department

• Teaching Livestock Economics, Marketing and Business Management to Under Graduate and Post Graduate students
• Developing price policy models for major livestock products in Tamil Nadu
• Assessing cost of production of different livestock outputs; and conducting economic and financial analyses
• Undertaking policy studies for development of livestock sector
• Offering farm advisory services and delivering livestock enterprise projects to the aspiring farmers

• Under Graduate – B.V.Sc. & A.H.: Units covering Livestock Economics, Marketing, Business Management and Entrepreneurship components of the course, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education (3+1) is being offered by the Livestock Economics Specialists of this Department
• Post Graduate – M.V.Sc. and Ph.D.: The Department offers the following ICAR PG curriculum (Agricultural Economics) based courses for the students pursuing Masters (M.V.Sc.) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes with Animal Husbandry Economics Specialization and to those seeking for their minors and supporting courses.
• Post-graduate diploma – The Department offers the post graduate diploma course in Animal Health Economics Specialization

• The Department of Animal Husbandry Economics was started on 12.12.1980. 42 M.V.Sc and 14 Ph.D students had so far completed
• Developed Technology Achievement Index (TAI) for Indian Livestock Sector under the guidance of Prof. M. S. Swaminathan
• The Department has organized National conference of Agricultural Economics Research Association on “Livestock in different farming systems” in 2000
• The Department has organized ICAR Winter school on Livestock Business and Market Intelligence in 2011
• The Dept. had organised two days National Conference on “Moving towards sustainability: Livestock production systems and Adaptive strategies in the era of Climate Change” on February 01 & 02, 2024 at Madras Veterinary College, Chennai.
• The Department is acting as a nodal centre for State Planning Commission, Tamil Nadu in livestock policy related matters
