DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY ECONOMICS


The unique Department of Animal Husbandry Economics was started on 12.12.1980 at Madras Veterinary College.

  • This Department has completed 25 research projects within a short span of 13 years
  • Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission has identified this department as a consultant for framing the Livestock Policy of the State
  • This Department has trained more than 350 persons in different areas of livestock economics
  • In order to serve the marginal livestock farmers, model economics of different livestock enterprises (Cow, Buffalo, Sheep, Goat, Desi fowl, White Pig, Rabbit and Japanese Quail) are prepared and distributed thereby extending the farm advisory services to the needy livestock farmers. So far, about 500 livestock farmers were benefited from the farm advisory services rendered by this department


Objectives

  • Teaching Livestock Economics, Marketing and Business Management to Under Graduate and Post Graduate students
  • Developing price policy models for major livestock products in Tamil Nadu
  • Assessing cost of production of different livestock outputs; and conducting economic and financial analyses
  • Undertaking policy studies for development of livestock sector
  • Offering farm advisory services and delivering livestock enterprise projects to the aspiring farmers

Education

The department is offering courses on Livestock Economics, Marketing, Business Management, and Entrepreneurship for the students of B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme. Besides, the department is also offering M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programmes in Animal Husbandry Economics.

Course details:

  • Under Graduate – B.V.Sc. & A.H.: Units covering Livestock Economics, Marketing, Business Management and Entrepreneurship components of the course, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education (3+1) is being offered by the Livestock Economics Specialists of this Department
  • Post Graduate – M.V.Sc. and Ph.D.: The Department offers the following ICAR PG curriculum (Agricultural Economics) based courses for the students pursuing Masters (M.V.Sc.) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes with Animal Husbandry Economics Specialization and to those seeking for their minors and supporting courses.

Research

The department is involved in working out the gray areas of farm production thereby improving the rural economy. For the development of livestock sector in Tamil Nadu, this department is doing macro level analysis in the areas of livestock production, population, productivity and employment generation through livestock enterprises. In marketing, various shandies located in different agro – climatic zones of Tamil Nadu are being studied. Further, new avenues for marketing of livestock products in the competitive GATT era are being explored.

Services

  • Assessing the market demand of different livestock products
  • The department assists in preparation of farm plans and prepares techno-economic feasibility Project reports for entrepreneurs and livestock farmers for getting Bank loans @ 0.25 % of the project cost

Extension

The Department has organised three One day “Human Resource Development Programmes / awarenessprogrammes on Government Policies and Plans in each of the SC clusters” in Chengalpattu, Vellore andKanchipuram districts with a financial assistance from the ICAR Development Grant for 130 farmers in March 2022.

The department offers consultancy services to the farmers and field veterinarians in working out the economics of different livestock enterprises and help the needy farmers in preparing the bankable livestock project reports. This department is specialized in doing the following services for the benefit of livestock farmers

  • Assessing the market demand of different livestock products
  • Analysing the break even quantity for livestock production
  • Profitability analysis of livestock farming
  • Consumer preference for livestock products
  • Cost-benefit analysis for technological intervention
  • Marketing channels of different livestock products
  • Procedure to obtain bank loans from financial institutions
  • Provides information on subsidies available in the banks to the needy farmers
  • Provides information on various policies implemented by government for the benefit of livestock farmers

Milestones

  • TheDepartment of Animal Husbandry Economics was started on 12.12.1980. 42 M.V.Sc and 12Ph.D students had so far completed
  • Developed Technology Achievement Index (TAI) for Indian Livestock Sector under the guidance of Prof.M.S.Swaminathan
  • The Department has organized National conference of Agricultural Economics Research Association on “Livestock in different farming systems” in 2000
  • The Department has organized ICAR Winter school on Livestock Business and Market Intelligence in 2011
  • The Department is acting as a nodal centre for State Planning Commission, Tamil Nadu in livestock policy related matters
