Small Holders’ Goat Production in Tropical Countries– Opportunities and Constraints
Goat farming is often associated with small holders and subsistence farming systems but it contributes significantly to the nutrition and wellbeing of rural populations in many developing countries, especially in Asian and African continents.
Most of the world goat production and consumption is in Asia, but a global view of the meat and dairy goat sector reveals important lessons about building successful modern goat farming to industry levels. Goats have shorter generation interval, higher prolificacy rate, wider marketability and the small scale goat farming contributes to the rural economy.
In order to reinforce traditional meat production systems in the tropics, existing breeding procedures for goats needs to be improved. Against this backdrop, the International Conference on Goat Production has been planned to provide a platform for scientists, researchers, students, goat entrepreneurs, management personnel, extension workers, planners, decision makers and other stakeholders from all over the world to share expertise and experiences, as well as discuss issues and concerns about traditional goat production, feeding, and economics.
Furthermore, the purpose of this conference is to propose strategies for overcoming obstacles in rural goat production in order to increase employment and nutritional security. This conference will also provide scientists and technocrats with cutting-edge research opportunities to supplement rural goat production while addressing socio-economic challenges.
