VETERINARY UNIVERSITY TRAINING AND RESEARCH CENTRE, TIRUCHIRAPALLI

Objectives and Mandate

  • To ensure immediate and thorough diagnosis of poultry diseases to avert the disease incidence.
  • To provide for regular monitoring of poultry diseases to avert the disease incidence
  • To survey the incidence of bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases in this area to formulate suitable vaccination and deworming schedule.
  • To impart training on livestock and poultry farming and allied subjects.
  • To act as interface of Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in dissemination of knowledge and proven technologies to the farmers, farm women, entrepreneurs and line departments through various extension programmes involving mass media.

Details of the Centre

This center was started as Poultry Research and Development Centre on 13-11-1980. From 01 April 1994 it was renamed as University Training and Research Centre. From 08 April 1999, it was again renamed as Veterinary University Training and Research Centre.

Major activities

  • Transfer of technology through various extension education programmes including training using various mass media on livestock and poultry farming.
  • Village awareness campaign to motivate farming community
  • Exhibitions, mass contact programs and interaction with farmers/entrepreneurs
  • Establishing linkage with line departments/NGOs for promoting community development
  • Analysing specimen in the lab and communicating the results for treatment/prevention

Current and recent activities

  • "First Regional Livestock and Fisheries Exhibitions" of TANUVAS was conducted from 24.02.2012 to 26.02.2012 at Tiruchirapalli. More than 9,000 farmers visited the exhibition

  • Eight students from Virginia – Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM), undergoing Internship training at Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, visited Trichy. They were taken to a feed unit which cater the needs of livestock farmers in the area by selling quality feed at nominal rate to improve production and productivity of livestock.
  • A field visit was made to different temples (Malaikottai, Srirangam, Thiruvanaikaval) of Tiruchirapalli on 07-11-2012 for sample collection in elephant to rule out tuberculosis . Dr.M.G.Jayathangaraj, Professor and Head, Department of Wildlife Science, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai and a student of Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, USA visited VUTRC, Tiruchirapalli.
