FARMERS TRAINING CENTRE, THIRUVARUR

Genesis

Started in a thatched rental building in 1999 at Ezhil Nagar, Tiruvarur, scaled through different phases and presently functioning in a permanent building from 03.10.2011 at Kurinchi Nagar, Tiruvarur.

Objectives

To bring progressive farmers up to date in the use of latest techniques in running intensive profitable livestock production enterprises such as Dairy, Poultry and Sheep.

  • Motivating and influencing the progressive farmers to develop entrepreneurship and to start farm enterprises using sound and commercial procedures.
  • To increase food production of animal origin such as milk, meat, and egg manifold through the training programme of farmers and farm youth as a means of promoting economic development and health of people in the state.

Infrastructure Available

A training hall well equipped with AV aids, Touch screen information Kiosk, Model fodder plots, Demo-Kits and a Mahindra Bolero Jeep.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

A. CONDUCTING TRAINING PROGRAMS

(i). Regular On-campus training programs are being conducted on a regular basis on Dairy farming, Goat rearing, Poultry farming etc.,

(ii). Regular Off-campus training programs are being conducted on a problem specific and needy basis. Mainly arranged for the beneficiaries of NGOs and other Agencies promoting self-employment in AH farming sectors.

are being taken-up on a regular basis to disseminate recent technologies developed and specific interventions required in livestock and Poultry sector for containing the cost of productions and maximizing the income

TECHNICAL ADVISORY SERVICES are provided for the farmers through phone, SMS, email, and In-person at the office and at the farm.

TELEVISION AND RADIO TALK are recorded and broadcasted on season specific and problem oriented farming topics besides Self-employment opportunities available in livestock and poultry industry.

  • One month duration self-employment course named "வெள்ளாடு வளர்ப்பு" of the DDE, TANUVAS has been offered at the centre for benefit of farming community.

(i). Completed research schemes

  • A DBT sponsored pilot project on "Upliftment of Economic status of Rural Women through adoption of estrus synchronization and fixed – time breeding in dairy animals" has been completed successfully in 1000 dairy animals during 2003-2005 by the centre

TECHNOLOGIES TRANSFERRED

Salient Achievements

  • Since inception (1999) more than 150 farms have been started through training and motivating the small and medium entrepreneurs in Cattle, Sheep, Goat, Piggery and Poultry farming practices in Thiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts.
