Establishment and Development of the Centre

This centre was started on 03.09.1980 and was known as Poultry Research and Development Centre (PRDC), Madurai and redesignated as University Training and Research Centre (UTRC) on 01.01.1993, Veterinary University Training and Research Centre (VUTRC) on 01.04.1999. The VUTRC is now upgraded as Veterinary University Training and Diagnostic Centre (VUTDC), Madurai on 04.02.2016. Until 18.9.89 it was under the control of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore and from 19.9.89 it came under Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai. Veterinary University Training and Diagnostic Centre, Madurai is functioning under the control of The Director, Centre for Animal Health Studies, TANUVAS, Chennai-51. Now this centre is functioning in its own building at Thirupparankundram with the following objectives.


  • To impart training on the felt needs of the end users, practicing farmers and officers of the line departments.
  • To act as a two way channel between the University and the farmers to identify the field based livestock and poultry problems and also to pass on the remedial measures.
  • To ensure surveillance and diagnosis of livestock and poultry diseases.
  • To motivate and encourage local farmers in establishing livestock and poultry farms for self-employment.
  • To develop and maintain data base on livestock and poultry in the area.

Services Offered

  • One of the important mandates of Veterinary University Training and Research Centre is to impart continuous training programmes on scientific management of various livestock management and livestock based enterprises with the help of audio visual aids to Self Help Group women, unemployed youths, school dropouts and practicing farmers with a view to maximize the Indian economy reaping full benefits to the grass root level farmers. The training programmes on various livestock farming activities are offered by highly qualified, experienced, technical staff members of this centre.

  • To conduct Skill Development Course and Self Employment Course in co-ordination with Directorate of Distance Education, TANUVAS, Chennai.
  • Technical advisory services on various livestock and poultry farming through telephone, mobile phone, e-mail, post, touch screen kiosk and in person. Technical advises through farm visits.
  • Dissemination of technology through guest lectures, exhibitions, by way of radio talks, popular articles, pamphlets, books, journals etc.
  • Organizing farmers meet to disseminate the technology to the farmers and to obtain the farmers problems at field level to solve the problems in livestock management.
  • Creating motivation on "Entrepreneurship through livestock farm" among the farmers, self Help Group women, school drop outs, unemployed graduates etc.
  • Creating awareness about the importance of green fodder production and feeding of mineral mixture, proper vaccination and regular vaccination in order to improve the productivity and health of the livestock as well as to decrease the production cost.
  • Conducting FLD, OFT and FFS

Diagnostic Activities

  • Disease investigations during disease outbreaks.
  • Surveillance and diagnosis of livestock and poultry diseases.
  • Conduct of post mortem, examination of samples for confirmation of the disease and suggesting prophylactic measures and treatment to contain the diseases.
  • Conducting animal health camps, mass contact programmes, infertility camps organized in collaboration with the line departments, non – governmental organizations and other educational institutions.
